The state government is pushing for a 42-storey residential tower above the Harbourside Shopping Centre, despite the City of Sydney’s concerns it will transfer more of Darling Harbour’s waterfront to private use.
Developer Mirvac’s $708 million plan to overhaul the shopping centre, built in 1988, has triggered a fresh dispute between Clover Moore’s council and Gladys Berejiklian’s government over development west of Sydney’s CBD.
That support is against the strong resistance of the city council, which is trying to prevent residential development from stymieing the area’s future as a burgeoning 24-hour entertainment, tourism and cultural precinct.
The IPC has yet to decide which members will determine the proposal.
