The Future of 3D Printed Construction

Construction has and always will be a forever changing industry that adapts to the introduction of innovative technologies. One such technology that is taking its first step into the industry is that of 3D printing.

As seen on the hit reality renovation TV show The Block, a 3D printed pool cabana became one of the first free standing builds to utilise this technology in Australia. Using a specialty concrete mix comprised of 30% recycled material. the 3D printed construction proved to be 20 to 30% more cost effective than traditional construction methods.

The applications of such technology pose interesting changes in the future, with 3D concrete printers scoped to use up to 70% recycled material, as well as self-insulating properties, to secure the adoption of this sustainable building practice. The intent to incorporate artificial intelligence for the printer to adapt and change the concrete mix depending on weather poses much more potential for the future of emerging technologies such as this, especially in terms of how they are applied to the construction industry.
